David Zafer (1934 to 2019) was an English-born Canadian violinist, conductor and academic. David Zafer was born in London, England, on April 2, 1934, but moved to Canada with his family in 1947. He studied with Elie Spivak and Albert Pratz at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and from 1966 to 1999 was a professor in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, where he later obtained the position of professor emeritus. He performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1956 to 1959, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (as assistant concertmaster) from 1960 for a year, and was concertmaster of the orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada from 1961 to 1964. He founded the Chamber Orchestra at the University of Toronto and directed their operations until his retirement. He recorded a CD in 1997 with the TSYO which preserved a live performance of theirs at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto. An extraordinary number of his students have gone on to hold concertmaster, principal, and section positions in major orchestras, as well as positions in chamber groups and at universities across North America and in Europe.
